Mitsubishi Motors is developing an electric light truck, which will be aimed at farmers, contractors and other commercial users, Japanese business daily Nikkei reported today. As is typical of this type of announcement, details of the launch schedule are vague, but the new EV will apparently go on sale in Japan in early 2013, at a price under 1.5 million yen after government subsidies (around $19,000).
Mitsubishi recently began deliveries of its new i-MiEV in the US. The five-door hatchback EV earned the title of most fuel-efficient car on the road in the EPA’s 2012 ratings. The company also has a light commercial EV called the Minicab-MiEV, which is soon to go on sale in Japan. Mitsubishi plans to sell 42,000 EVs worldwide in fiscal 2012, double the number projected for this year.
