Umicore to build cathode precursor and active material plant in Canada

Umicore, a materials technology and recycling company, is planning to build a cathode precursor material and cathode active material plant in Ontario, Canada. “The planned facility would be the first of its kind in North America, combining cathode and precursor materials manufacturing at a large industrial scale and thereby completing the missing link in Canada’s battery value chain, from natural resources to electric mobility,” says Umicore.

Umicore plans to start building the plant on a 350-acre plot in Loyalist, Ontario in 2023. After the plant begins operations at the end of 2025, the company says it will rely on 100% renewable energy, and will have enough annual production capacity to support about one million EVs.

“Umicore is in negotiations with several potential customers for production contracts in North America,” says the company.

According to the company: “Umicore will also explore opportunities for metals refining and battery recycling in North America, to offer its customers in the region secure and circular access to critical battery materials and–in line with its earlier announced ambition to establish a regional presence in North America–across the CAM value chain.”
