Samsung SDI has completed a new EV battery plant in the Gaoxin Industrial District in Xi’an, in the Shaanxi Province of China. The company claims the title of first global battery manufacturer to construct an EV battery plant in China.
The Xi’an plant began production in September, and is delivering batteries to automakers including bus manufacturer Yutong and truck manufacturer Foton.
Samsung’s Xi’an Plant can manufacture both battery cells and modules, and can produce enough batteries for approximately 40,000 EVs per year. The company plans to invest $600 million in the plant by 2020, with the goal of achieving $1 billion in sales.
