Nidec’s new E-Axle integrated traction motor system

The 45-year-old Nidec Corporation has unveiled a fully integrated traction motor system. Nidec’s E-Axle is based on an earlier design that included an integrated inverter. The new design also integrates an electric motor and reduction gearbox.

According to Nidec, the new design delivers higher torque than earlier models – up to 3,900 N-m. Despite the light weight of the system – around 83 kg – the motor attains a maximum power of 150 kW. The integrated design eliminates the need for wires connecting the various encased components.

Nidec designed the new product for maximum flexibility: “The new traction motor system covers a wide array of applications, ranging from compact cars to SUV platforms, and is compatible with AWD vehicles due to an optional clutch mechanism that can be disengaged when only two of the wheels need to be powered.”

The design phase is almost completed, and production is slated for 2019. Manufacturing will begin in China, and eventually transition to global production.
