Innovate UK ponies up £15 million for carbon-reducing vehicle technologies

Nicolas Raymond UK Flag

The UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board) has put up a pot of £15 million ($24 million) in grants for the development of vehicle technologies that can reduce CO2 emissions.

Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. Innovate UK is seeking proposals in these areas:

  • Electric machines and power electronics
  • Energy storage and energy management
  • Lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures
  • Internal combustion engines and energy efficiency

Other fields will also be considered, but they must be “highly disruptive technologies, which will significantly accelerate the reduction of CO2 beyond that achieved through standard product development cycles.”

Proposals must be collaborative and business-led, and must be clearly applicable to road-going vehicles.

Innovate UK expects to fund mainly industrial research projects in which a business partner will attract up to 50% public funding. Projects are expected to range in size from £500,000 to £2 million ($804,000 to $3 million).
