Nth Cycle, a metals extraction and recycling firm, has inaugurated a 21,000-square-foot refining plant in Fairfield, Ohio to provide a US source of nickel and cobalt chemicals for lithium-ion batteries.

Nth Cycle’s electro-extraction technology will convert metal scrap, electronics waste, undeveloped mining resources and refinery waste into nickel and cobalt through its premium Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) product at the new plant. Nth Cycle’s patented OYSTER electro-extraction processor produces MHP with the highest concentration of nickel hydroxide and cobalt hydroxide available, the company claimed. Nth Cycle says its MHP product eliminates the risk of inconsistent supply and quality from politically unstable countries while generating a product with over 90% nickel and cobalt content. This compares with typical material grades of 30-40% nickel and 1-6% cobalt (as per Fastmarkets MHP Index).

“Nth is poised to make history as the first US-based minerals and metal manufacturer, a key requirement for domestic production through the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Dawn Lippert, CEO of Elemental Excelerator.
