If you need convincing that Tesla does things differently from other automakers, take a look at the latest set of tweets from CEO Elon Musk:
Ramping up the Autopilot software team at Tesla to achieve generalized full autonomy. If interested, contact autopilot@teslamotors.com.

Should mention that I will be interviewing people personally and Autopilot reports directly to me. This is a super high priority. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 20, 2015
Tesla’s Autopilot system is up and running, with an army of idiots doing their best to break it, and post the results on YouTube. And this is just the first step toward full vehicle autonomy, which Musk has said he envisions within about three years.
Other automakers are dabbling in disruptive technologies, but their main focus is on incremental improvements to their established products, which are currently hauling in record profits. Tesla, on the other hand, is pushing full speed ahead into the brave new electric, autonomous, connected world.
And can you imagine any of the Big Three CEOs actually interviewing engineers personally?
