What’s the most fuel-efficient model in Porsche’s lineup? Now, what’s the company’s fastest street-legal model? Many will be surprised to learn that both these superlatives belong to the same car: the 918 Spyder, which was on display at last week’s LA Auto Show.
As McLaren (with the P1) and Ferrari (with the LaFerrari) have also learned, it’s the combination of gas and electric power that yields the ultimate in performance. The 918 Spyder has a 608 hp 4.6-liter V8, as well as a pair of electric motors – a 127 hp unit in front and a 154 hp job in back. This powerhouse propels the hybrid hypercar from 0-60 mph in less than 2.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of over 211 mph.
The Spyder recently won glory at Germany’s Nürburgring, where the Weissach version set a new record, rounding the 12.9-mile circuit in 6:57 minutes and becoming the first production car to break the seven-minute mark.
About that fuel economy – it’s been estimated that Porsche’s new PHEV can get up to 94 mpg. At a price of $845,000 however, it might be a while before the savings on gas justify trading in your Prius.
