Volkswagen unveils CrossBlue Coupé plug-in hybrid concept

The CrossBlue Coupé is based on VW’s new Modular Transverse Matrix, a system that specifies uniform positions for motors and transmissions across several platforms.

 

Volkswagen’s latest electric endeavor is the CrossBlue Coupé, a plug-in hybrid, all-wheel drive SUV, which will be on display at this week’s Shanghai Auto Show.

The new concept vehicle sports a V6 turbo gas engine and two electric motors: a 40 kW one in the front, and an 85 kilowatter in back. The 9.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is housed in the center tunnel, and the 375 V power electronics unit lives in the front engine compartment.

Maximum system power is up to 305 kW (409 hp), and total torque is 700 N·m (516 lb-ft). Maximum speed is 147 mph, combined fuel consumption is 78 mpg, and all-electric range is around 20 miles.

The CrossBlue Coupé is based on VW’s new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), a system that specifies uniform positions for motors and transmissions across several platforms. According to VW, all new MQB models are designed so that they can be built with any engine type – gas, diesel, natural gas, hybrid or electric.

The CrossBlue Coupé can be driven in five modes: Eco (classic hybrid mode); Sport; Offroad  (permanent all-wheel drive); EV (only the rear 85 kW E-motor provides propulsion); and Charge (the gas engine charges the battery for later zero-emissions driving).

The center console features a 10.1 inch touchscreen. Located next to the charging socket is a 16 A, 230 V interface that allows the CrossBlue Coupé to act as an emergency generator.
