Tesla to demonstrate Autopilot Hardware 3 capabilities

Tesla Model S Autopilot

Tesla’s long-awaited Autopilot Hardware 3 computer is on the production line and on its way to a street near you. “Tesla is making significant progress in the development of its autonomous driving software and hardware, including our FSD computer, which is currently in production and which will enable full-self driving via future over-the-air software updates,” said the California carmaker.

It’s unclear when Full Self-Driving will be available in production vehicles, but Elon Musk said last week that the company plans to retrofit cars with the new HW3 computer, and has predicted that the system will be operational by the end of the year. Tesla owners who bought the Full Self-Driving software package will receive the upgrade for free.

Tesla will demonstrate the new capabilities at its Palo Alto headquarters for a select audience of investors later this month. “Investors will be able to take test-drives to experience our Autopilot software first-hand, including features and functionality that are under active development. Investors will also hear directly from Elon Musk, as well as VP of Engineering, Stuart Bowers, VP of Hardware Engineering, Pete Bannon, and Sr. Director of AI, Andrej Karpathy.”

The event, which will be webcast, could prove to be an autonomy milestone – it sounds like Tesla is planning to publicly demonstrate a couple of new features for the first time. Musk has hinted that the system will be able to recognize traffic lights and stop signs, and to drive autonomously on city streets.
