Syensqo signs €150 million in Solef PVDF contracts for battery binder materials

Belgian multinational materials company Syensqo signed long-term contracts worth 150 million euros during the first quarter of the year for the supply of its battery-grade Solef Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) to automotive original equipment manufacturers and battery makers.

Solef PVDF, a thermoplastic fluoropolymer, provides superior separator-electrode adhesion and binder performance, delivering durable, high-performance and safe batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles, according to the company.

Syensqo will fulfill the contracts from its flagship plant in Tavaux, France. The site is currently expanding its PVDF capacity expansion, which it expects to complete by the end of 2025 to commence operations in 2026. Syensqo is a spinoff from Belgian chemical company Solvay.

In addition to Solef PVDF, Syensqo’s offering for the automotive industry extends to its portfolio of material solutions addressing customers’ needs for lightweighting, higher performance and more energy-efficient EVs, hybrids and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

“We are passionate about innovating with our advanced materials bringing higher performance to batteries, longer driving range to electrical vehicles, enabling a sustainable future for transportation,” said Peter Browning, President of the Specialty Polymers Business Unit at Syensqo.
