Battery powerhouse Samsung SDI introduced several advances in battery tech at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The star of the show was a new cell that the company says could enable EV driving ranges of up to 373 miles, and can fast charge in 20 minutes. Mass production is slated for 2021.
Another interesting new item on display was an integrated battery module concept that is 10% smaller and lighter compared to Samsung’s currently produced models. A conventional EV battery module consisting of 12 cells has a capacity of 2-3 kWh. This new module has more than 24 cells, and a capacity of 6-8 kWh. It also features a higher safety level thanks to its design, the company said.
Samsung SDI also showcased a 21700 format cylindrical battery cell (the format being produced by Tesla and Panasonic at the Gigafactory) with improved energy density, power and performance, as well as a full line-up of 12 V and 48 V Low Voltage Systems.
