REE Automotive opens Engineering Centre of Excellence in the UK

Israel-based REE Automotive has established a new development facility in the UK. The company’s Engineering Centre of Excellence is located at MIRA Technology Park in the Midlands of England. MIRA Technology Park is home to some 35 global OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and other automotive technology companies.

“A key driver in our decision to establish our presence in the UK is the UK government’s forward-thinking vision and zero-emissions policy,” said Mike Charlton, REE’s COO.

REE, which recently announced plans to go public through a merger with 10X Capital Venture Acquisition (NASDAQ: VCVC), has developed a platform that’s designed to enable vehicle manufacturers to build any size or shape of electric or autonomous vehicle, from class 1 through class 6. The company’s REEcorner technology packs steering, braking, suspension and control components into the arch of the wheel, creating what the company claims is “the industry’s flattest EV platform.”

REE says its scalable, modular platform offers multiple customer benefits, including complete vehicle design freedom, fast development times, ADAS compatibility and global safety standard compliance.

REE will use its new Engineering Centre for engineering design, validation, verification and testing, as well as product homologation. The MIRA Technology Park will provide the company with access to testing facilities and a proving ground for physical testing and validation of its REEcorner and EV platform.

Headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, with subsidiaries in the US, the UK and Germany, REE employs a “CapEx-light manufacturing model” that leverages its Tier 1 partners’ existing production lines. The company plans to establish a network of 15 “integration centers,” where it will assemble components near points of sale. The first of these is set to open in the US in 2021.

“With the recent announcement that we plan to go public via a SPAC through our merger with 10X Capital Venture Acquisition Corp. and funding from long-term strategic investors including Koch Strategic Platforms, Mahindra & Mahindra and Magna International, REE would have sufficient capital to accelerate mass production of REEcorner technology and modular EV platforms,” said Daniel Barel, REE’s co-founder and CEO. “The first REEcorners are expected to be delivered to customers in 2022, with mass production beginning in 2023.”
