The Nordic countries continue to be the most plugged-in place on the planet. After yet another quarter of record sales, the region now has over 200,000 registered plug-in vehicles.

In the third quarter of 2017, 21,965 plug-in vehicles were sold, a 39% increase compared to Q3 2016, Insero Quarterly reports.

“In the third quarter we observed progress in all Nordic countries,” says Jens Christian Morell Lodberg Høj, Chief Innovator of E-Mobility at Insero. “This is the result of several aspects, including new models and political actions.

Volkswagen had the best-selling vehicle in both the pure EV and plug-in hybrid categories. The top-selling EV was the e-Golf, which sold 2,219 units, while the most popular PHEV was the Passat GTE, which moved 2,008 vehicles.

“The last two quarters, we have clearly seen that Volkswagen has gained the upper hand, in spite of the very active profiling of electric vehicles seen by Nissan and Renault,” said Mr. Høj.

PHEVs are outselling pure EVs in the region – 54% compared to 46% – even though pure EVs are more popular in Norway. “With the PHEV growth in Sweden and Finland, the balance has shifted in favor of the PHEVs,” said Mr. Høj.

Norway continues to have the lion’s share of the overall Nordic EV market, with 73%. Sweden maintains second place with 21%. Things are just starting to stir in Finland (3.5%) and Denmark (2.2%).
