A team of Kiwi car guys has launched a series of videos in which they tackle their first conversion of a used car from gasoline power to 100% electric drive. Series hosts Theo Gibson, Sebastian Telfer and Chris Armstrong hope to dispel some of the myths about EVs and raise public awareness in New Zealand and beyond.

The documentary is highly entertaining and not too technical (at least so far). It presents a handy graphic to outline the steps that will be involved in the conversion, then heads to the garage, where the earnest tinkerers learn by doing. Along the way, they consult various experts, including other DIY-ers who have built successful conversions.

The team chose a rather obscure model, a 1992 Toyota Sera, because it was small and light, looked cool with its gull-wing doors, and was unusual – there aren’t many on the road, so onlookers will know right away that it’s something special.

By the end of part one, they’ve got the engine out, and seem to be having a great time. This is the first episode of a planned five-part series.
