Japan’s NEDO chooses IHI to develop tech for aircraft electrification

Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has chosen engineering firm IHI Technology’s initiative to develop electric power control and thermal and air management system technology for the Next-Generation Aircraft Development Project under its Green Innovation Fund program.

NEDO created the ¥2-trillion ($12.96-billion) Green Innovation Fund to invest in the energy and industrial sectors to achieve carbon neutrality.

IHI will develop aircraft electrification technologies such as megawatt generators and an aircraft electric turbo compressor. It will use these to build a power control system integrating a hybrid propulsion system, as well as a thermal and air management system using an air conditioning system for airframes. This initiative will run until the end of the fiscal year ending March 2031.
