Hyundai and South Korean-headquartered battery maker LG Energy Solution (LGES) have announced a $2-billion expansion of their battery cell manufacturing joint venture at Hyundai’s EV Metaplant in Bryan County, Georgia, bringing the total investment value of the JV to $4.3 billion.
At full operational capacity, the 30 GWh facility is expected to support annual production of 300,000 EVs. Hyundai Mobis will assemble battery packs from cells manufactured at the plant and supply them to Hyundai’s US manufacturing facilities for production of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EV models.
“Governor Kemp set a goal of Georgia becoming the top location for EV manufacturing in the United States, and with this announcement today, the state is in a great position to claim that distinction,” said Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson.
