Samsung SDI has unveiled several new types of Li-ion battery packs, including a 500 Wh e-bike pack that can deliver a range of 100 km.
Another new battery pack for e-bikes is equipped with 21700-type batteries, which have higher energy capacity than previous cylindrical cells. Samsung hopes to make it the new standard in small cylindrical cells, replacing the venerable 18650 cells (18mm in diameter and 65mm in length). The 21700 format boasts capacity up to 35% higher than 18650 cells.
Samsung has also demonstrated a Bluetooth function that will enable users to check battery capacity on a smartphone.
According to sources such as Navigant Research and Bike Europe, the global e-bike market will reach around 34 million bikes this year. Demand for e-bike lithium-ion batteries is expected to surpass 163 million cells by the end of 2015, a 14% increase from last year.
Japanese market research company B3 predicts that Samsung SDI will hold onto its number-one spot among e-bike battery providers, with a total market share of 25%.
