UnitedSiC announces SiC FETs with RDS(on) of less than 10 mohms

Range and horsepower may get the headlines, but to powertrain designers, drain-source resistance, also known as RDS(on), is a sexy spec. Those in the know are excited over the news that UnitedSiC, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, is introducing four new SiC field-effect transistors (FETs) that boast RDS(on) levels of… Read more »

Why did Porsche go to the trouble of designing an 800 V Taycan EV?

How higher-voltage battery packs enable faster charging ecosystems Porsche took on a considerable engineering challenge when it decided to design an 800 V EV system for the Taycan, because nearly every other hybrid and EV in the world operates at 400 V or less. There simply was not a wide range of high-voltage off-the-shelf parts… Read more »

A closer look at advances in power PCBs

In just the last few years there have been some major improvements in printed circuit board technology that are especially relevant to power electronics. Arguably the most important of the recent advances is the development of new board substrates that can withstand higher temperatures, along with metal cores for improved heat transfer, and the ability… Read more »

Delphi and Cree partner on silicon carbide devices

Delphi Technologies and Cree have partnered to use Cree’s silicon carbide semiconductor technology in Delphi’s electronic systems for EVs. The partnership will combine Cree’s silicon carbide-based metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with Delphi’s traction drive inverters and DC/DC converters and chargers, aiming to extend driving range and provide faster charging times. To start, Cree’s MOSFETs will… Read more »

Delphi begins production of 800 V silicon carbide inverters

Delphi Technologies has begun volume production of an 800 V silicon carbide (SiC) inverter. The component uses silicon carbide-based metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) technology. Delphi’s announcement follows a recent partnership with SiC semiconductors manufacturer Cree, which will combine Cree’s MOSFETs with Delphi’s traction drive inverters and DC/DC converters and chargers. Delphi’s new inverters are supported… Read more »

Infineon’s new EasyPACK modules with CoolSiC MOSFETs designed for charging stations

Semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies has launched two new 1,200 V EasyPACK modules with SiC MOSFETs as part of its 1,200 V series. Infineon says the new product is designed to meet the growing demand for silicon carbide (SiC) solutions. Both the Easy 1B and Easy 2B integrate Infineon’s CoolSiC MOSFETs and are aimed at both… Read more »
