English startup Union Motion specializes in manufacturing custom electric motorcycles and other vehicles to customers’ specifications. The company’s latest creation is the Phaser Type 1, an electric sport bike with a spare, post-modern look.
The Phaser Type 1 is based on a Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer. Union Motion started with the bare chassis – frame, forks, swingarm and wheels – and found that the Yamaha’s double loop frame made a great base for experimenting with the battery location and drivetrain layout.
The 6 kWh, 50 kg battery pack is mounted between the two top frame loops, keeping the bike’s center of gravity low. The pack sits on a set of rails, allowing it to be easily removed and swapped for a fresh pack.
The air-cooled, axial flux, brushless, three-phase permanent magnet motor delivers continuous power of 32 kW (42 hp), or peak power of 48 kW (64 hp). Torque at the wheel is 120 Nm (continuous) or 300 Nm (peak).
The Phaser Type 1 has a range of 60 miles, a curb weight of 160 kg, and a top speed of 110 mph.
