UECC orders two hybrid battery/LNG car carrying ships

Shipping company United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract to construct two new Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTC) with China Ship Building Trading and Jiangnan Shipyard Group. The vessels will be powered by a hybrid battery/liquefied natural gas (LNG) solution, and the first vessel is planned for delivery in 2021.

Each vessel will have a length of 169 meters, a beam of 28 meters, and a carrying capacity of 3,600 vehicles on 10 cargo decks.

“UECC’s experience with LNG PCTCs has been very good and there was really no other alternative for us,” said UECC’s Jan Thore Foss. “The LNG solution will reduce the CO2 emission by about 25 percent.”
