XL, a Boston-based manufacturer of electric fleet vehicles, unveiled a plug-in hybrid Ford Super Duty F-250 pickup truck at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. This hybrid F-250 joins XL’s XLP Ford F-150 that the company began shipping in 2018.

XL reports that, on initial assessment, the XLP F-250 truck provides up to a 50% improvement in fuel economy over conventional factory F-250s and reduces GHG emissions by 33% during normal operation. XL notes these numbers are consistent with what the PHEV F-150 has achieved at EPA-certified testing facilities.

The XLP F-250 features a 15 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The entire hybrid powertrain system weighs 750 pounds and is mounted onto existing factory components. XL notes that the XLP F-250 has no effect on Ford factory warranties, and requires no special maintenance procedures or charging infrastructure enhancements.

XL says the truck is scheduled to begin shipping to customers before the end of 2019.

XL CEO Tod Hynes said, “The fleet industry is looking for ways to electrify their trucks now, without adding significant infrastructure costs or range concerns for their drivers.”
