Schwarzenegger rebuts Trump’s attack on California emissions standards

The Trump administration launched another salvo in its war on environmental regulations this week by formally revoking California’s authority to set its own auto emissions rules. The administration previously announced that it would pursue anti-trust investigations against four automakers that forged a compromise with California on fuel economy standards. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican former governor… Read more »

Aptera returns from the dead, unveils 1,000-mile EV

Long-time followers of the EV scene may remember Aptera, a startup that was founded in 2006, designed a unique three-wheeled two-seater EV, then went into liquidation in 2011. Now, Aptera is back. Three of the founders have bought back the intellectual property, and have spent many months working on an improved version of Aptera’s vehicle… Read more »

Colorado adopts California zero-emissions vehicle mandate

Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission (AQCC) voted 8-1 to approve the state’s adoption of the zero-emissions vehicle mandate. Colorado became the 10th state to join California’s ZEV program. According to the state’s Air Pollution Control Division (yes, this is a separate agency from the AQCC), automakers will be required to make ZEVs 4.9% of the… Read more »

Major bank: Oil is finished; EVs+renewables are 6x more cost-effective

Many have foretold the demise of the global petroleum industry, to be met with every reaction from delight to dismay, but mostly with disbelief. However, the latest prophet of doom is no kale-cooking techno-greenie, but French banking group BNP Paribas, the largest bank in the Eurozone and the 8th largest in the world. UCLouvain discovers new solid-state material with high lithium diffusion coefficient

As research into solid-state lithium batteries continues, researchers at Belgium’s Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) say they’ve found a new solid material, LTPS, in which lithium can travel more easily than in any other solid electrolyte. The results are published in the scientific journal Chem from Cell Press. Lithium ions are much less mobile in… Read more »

A closer look at current sensors in EVs

Pretty much every electronic circuit that handles significant power utilizes some means of measuring current, whether to simply protect against overload or because it is a basic functional requirement. In this article we’ll cover some of the more common devices and circuit techniques for measuring current in the major subsystems of an EV, including when… Read more »

Sparkcharge launches a portable and scalable DC fast charging unit

The all-electric transport system of the future is a work in progress, to say the least. In fact, at the moment we stand near the beginning of the transition, and many aspects of the charged world to come are not yet clear. It may be that the EV ecosystem that we now foresee will prove… Read more »

Pre-Switch promises to add 5-12% more EV range by eliminating switching losses

How would you like it if your EV could go ten percent farther with the same size battery? You’d love it, of course, and so would every EV manufacturer out there. Range is one of the most important parameters in the EV industry, as many potential EV drivers are apprehensive about lower range ratings. Manufacturers… Read more »
