Group14 begins construction of second US silicon battery materials factory

Battery manufacturer Group14 Technologies has begun the construction of its second commercial-scale Battery Active Materials (BAM-2) factory in Moses Lake, Washington. The 1 million-square-foot campus will manufacture commercial quantities of SCC55, together with the BAM-1 factory in Woodinville, Washington. SCC55 is a stable silicon-carbon composite anode with five times the capacity of graphite, which affords… Read more »

Ionic Mineral Technologies launches nano-silicon product for Li-ion cell manufacturers

Ionic Mineral Technologies, a developer of silicon anode battery materials, has launched Generation 1 Ionisil nano-silicon for lithium-ion cell makers. EV OEM production labs have independently confirmed that an all-silicon battery using Generation 1 Ionisil can reach a reversible capacity of 2,700 mAh/g and 2,500 mAh/g at a 2,000 mAh fast charging rate in half-cell… Read more »

How NanoGraf is commercializing the “world’s most energy-dense” 18650 battery cell with stable silicon oxide

Q&A with NanoGraf COO Connor Hund Graphite, a pure form of carbon, is a critical material for battery anodes. Graphite’s physical structure allows it to store lithium ions, which merrily migrate to the anode when the battery is charged. Unlike cathodes, which can be composed of various combinations of chemicals (cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium, iron,… Read more »

Li-Metal nearing production of lithium metal anode material

Li-Metal, a developer of lithium metal anodes and other battery technologies, has released an operational update for its roll-to-roll anode pilot plant in Rochester, New York. Since its commissioning earlier this year, the facility has been ramping up production of its lithium metal anode sample materials using Li-Metal’s roll-to-roll physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. This… Read more »

Group14 raises $400 million for silicon-carbon battery materials factory in US

Silicon-carbon battery tech supplier Group14 Technologies has raised $400 million in Series C funding, which it plans to use to open its second battery active materials factory in the US. The plant will produce the company’s proprietary SCC55 lithium-silicon battery material for Porsche subsidiary Cellforce Group, which will use it to begin producing battery cells… Read more »

Sila’s Washington anode material plant to begin production in 2024

Battery materials maker Sila Nanotechnologies will open an anode material plant in Moses Lake, Washington. The company claims its anode material boosts the energy density of lithium-ion batteries by 20%. The 600,000-square-foot hydro-powered facility will begin producing silicon-based anode material in the second half of 2024, and full production is scheduled for the first half… Read more »

Ceylon Graphite’s silicon-enhanced vein graphite shows increased discharge capacity

Graphite mining and product company Ceylon Graphite has announced test results for its silicon-enhanced vein graphite anode material. In independent tests performed by Warwick University, Ceylon’s silicon-enhanced vein graphite yielded a specific discharge capacity (SDC) of 446 mAh/g in comparison to vein graphite’s typical SDC of 393 mAh/g. Ceylon’s 13% higher SDC was achieved in… Read more »

Amprius’s Si-Nanowire anode shortens charging time

Battery manufacturer Amprius Technologies is on a mission to reduce EV charging times. The company’s Amprius Extreme Fast Charge feature is enabled by its proprietary Si-Nanowire anode, which is thinner and lighter than conventional graphite anodes, and has much higher conductivity due to the high electrical continuity between silicon and the current collector. The Si-Nanowire… Read more »

OneD unveils new silicon-based battery technology

OneD Battery Sciences has introduced SINANODE, a technology to power the next generation of silicon-based EV batteries. The SINANODE process fuses silicon nanowires onto commercial graphite powders, which the company says triples the energy density of the anode while cutting its cost per kWh in half. The higher energy density increases battery range while nanowires… Read more »

Unifrax introduces new Li-ion anode technology

Unifrax has announced that its new proprietary technology, SiFAB (Silicon Fiber Anode Battery Technology), which is currently in advanced testing after years of R&D, has shown promising performance in multiple battery systems, enables higher energy density, and has demonstrated incremental Si loadings of greater than 40 percent. “SiFAB is the latest development from our long-standing… Read more »
