Li-ion battery pack prices rise for first time, to $151/kWh

Lithium-ion battery prices have been dropping for so long that industry players and pundits tend to factor ever-cheaper cells into their predictions, and many have made (dubious) comparisons to Moore’s Law, one of the core tenets of the computer industry. Now, thanks to rising raw material and battery component prices, along with more general inflation,… Read more »

GM and Microvast to develop new battery separator tech, build US plant

GM and battery manufacturer Microvast are collaborating to develop specialized EV battery separator technology, and to build a new separator plant in the US, supported by a $200-million grant from the DOE’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing initiative. Separators are battery components that separate the anode from the cathode, while allowing for ion transfer…. Read more »

OneD raises $25 million in Series C funds, enters R&D agreement with GM

GM and OneD Battery Sciences will cooperate to research the possible use of OneD’s silicon nanotechnology in GM’s Ultium cells. Meanwhile, OneD has raised $25 million in Series C funding from investors including GM Ventures and Volta Energy Technologies. “Given a licensing business model and low operational costs, Series C funds will be used to… Read more »

Chinese companies to increase production of OCSiAl’s graphene nanotube dispersion

Graphene nanotube company OCSiAl has announced that two Chinese manufacturers of its graphene nanotube dispersion plan to raise production capacities for the dispersions. The graphene nanotube dispersion is designed for lithium-ion cells. Chinese chemical manufacturers Shenyang East Chemical (East Chem) and Shanghai Haiyi Scientific Trading (Haiyi) started producing OCSiAl’s graphene nanotubes in 2019. According to… Read more »

ONE’s hybrid battery pack combines the best aspects of two chemistries to deliver 600 miles of EV range

Q&A with ONE CTO Dr. Steven Kaye. There is a wide range of characteristics that describe the performance of any given battery chemistry: energy density, specific energy, specific power, discharge efficiency, self-discharge rate, cycle life, calendar life, and—not the least important—cost.  Some types of Li-ion chemistries are really good in a few characteristics but fall… Read more »

Solid Power installs pilot production line for all-solid-state EV cells

Solid-state battery cell developer Solid Power has finished installing a pilot production line for making EV battery cells. The company says the all-solid-state cells will be sulfide-based, and will include anodes with more than 50% active silicon. They will be rated from 60 to 100 Ah. The company plans to perform internal testing on the… Read more »

Next Generation Chemistries For Automotive Batteries: The Future Or A Fad?

This session will be available to view on-demand starting Apr 4, 2022, 8:00 am EDT. A lot of chemistries have been highlighted as potential next-generation battery technology for the automotive sector. These include silicon dominant anodes, solid-state electrolytes, sodium ion, LNMO and lithium metal anodes to name a few. Are these next-generation chemistries really the… Read more »

Amprius’s Si-Nanowire anode shortens charging time

Battery manufacturer Amprius Technologies is on a mission to reduce EV charging times. The company’s Amprius Extreme Fast Charge feature is enabled by its proprietary Si-Nanowire anode, which is thinner and lighter than conventional graphite anodes, and has much higher conductivity due to the high electrical continuity between silicon and the current collector. The Si-Nanowire… Read more »

Wildcat ramps up its focus on EV Supercell breakthroughs

The lithium-ion battery has proven to be an excellent fuel tank for EVs, but there remains much room for improvement. We’re still far from what’s theoretically achievable in terms of Li-ion capacity, safety, cost and charge times. As battery manufacturers continue their quest for improved chemistry and material combinations, they rely on applied researchers like… Read more »

Northvolt acquires Cuberg, will commercialize next-gen lithium metal battery cells

Northvolt has announced the acquisition of Cuberg, a battery company delivering lithium metal cells produced on existing lithium-ion manufacturing lines. Cuberg says its cells, which are based on its electrolyte technology for lithium metal anodes, deliver more than 70 percent increased capacity versus comparable lithium-ion cells. Building on this foundation, Northvolt and Cuberg will expand… Read more »
