Westwater Resources is building a facility in Alabama to process one of the largest graphite deposits in the US

Q&A with Jon Jacobs of Westwater Resources Everyone in the EV industry is talking about the IRA and the BIL, two sets of federal regulations that include strong incentives for automakers to establish domestic supply chains for EV raw materials and components. Not everyone is happy about the requirements, and there are a number of… Read more »

NOVONIX and LG Energy Solution partner to produce artificial graphite anode materials for EV batteries

NOVONIX, a battery materials firm, and LG Energy Solution, a battery manufacturer, have announced a partnership to produce artificial graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries. NOVONIX also agreed to issue $30 million in unsecured convertible notes to LG Energy Solution. LG Energy Solution and NOVONIX will engage in a separate purchase agreement when specific development… Read more »

Anovion to invest $800 million in new US graphite anode materials manufacturing facility

Advanced materials company Anovion Technologies has selected Decatur County in Southwest Georgia as the location of its new manufacturing facility for the production of synthetic graphite anode materials. The Decatur County facility is expected to produce 40,000 metric tonnes of synthetic graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries per year, according to the company. It will… Read more »

Public-private research project to develop US graphite supply for EVs

Ramaco Carbon, a carbon technology business, is working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to create “made in America” large-scale graphite-making technologies from coal.  A fossil energy and carbon management program field work proposal supported by Ramaco Carbon and ORNL aims to take a bench-scale ORNL process to the commercial scale in two years. Ramaco… Read more »

LithTech launches novel raw material extraction technology for lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and graphite

LithTech, an Australian firm, has announced its 2023 capital raising drive to enhance its magnesium separation process, which increases the brine extraction of essential raw elements, including nickel, lithium, cobalt, copper and natural graphite, used in EV batteries. After lab-scale testing, the Dow Centre at the University of Queensland has provided financial and technical support,… Read more »

Ceylon Graphite’s spheroidized vein graphite anode shows strong performance in full-cell testing

Ceylon Graphite has completed full-cell testing using spheroidized vein graphite materials in commercial-size pouch cells, and the company says the results meet OEM specifications. Ceylon Graphite says that in 2021-2023 testing, its Sri Lankan vein graphite anodes outperformed industry-standard commercial synthetic graphite and had outstanding repeatability. They attained 161 mAh/g discharge capacity, compared to the… Read more »

Researchers say novel SEI-forming binder for graphite can improve fast charging performance

A team of researchers from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) has demonstrated a new fast-charging technique that promotes Li-ion intercalation of active material through the use of a novel binder material. According to the studies, the binder material improves desolvated Li-ion transport through the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and within the… Read more »

Magnis to supply US-processed graphite anode material to Tesla

Tesla has entered into a Binding Offtake Agreement with Australia-based Magnis Energy Technologies, “a vertically integrated lithium-ion battery technology and materials company,” for anode active materials (AAM).   Magnis is developing a graphite mine in Tanzania where it plans to extract “ultra-high-purity natural flake graphite.” Tesla plans to purchase at least 17,500 tons per year (tpa)… Read more »

A closer look at graphite—its forms, functions and future in EV batteries

Q&A with Graphex CEO John DeMaio Reading the EV press, you might assume that lithium, cobalt and nickel are the stars of the battery show—they get a lot of coverage, as pundits debate the relative merits of NMC and LFP cathode chemistries and agonize over looming shortages. Meanwhile, over in the anode, there’s an unsung… Read more »
