Polish battery system manufacturer Impact Clean Power Technology (ICPT) has started construction of a factory designed to produce battery systems for public transportation, railroads and stationary energy storage applications. “For 2021, Impact held about 15% of the European electric bus battery market,” says the company. According to ICPT, the GigafactoryX “will be powered by a… Read more »

The EV raw materials crunch: How bad, how long, how to solve it?
This article originally appeared in Issue 60: April-June 2022 Subscribe now Every new technology must overcome a series of temporary constraints on its way to widespread adoption. Since modern EVs appeared a decade ago, they’ve motored past many of these bottlenecks, (or hurdles, or roadblocks—pick your preferred metaphor). Range has increased, access to charging infrastructure has expanded,… Read more »
Will the Buy American provisions of the revamped EV tax credit do more harm than good?
Auto industry experts (and others) are beginning to assess the details of the redesigned federal EV tax credit program contained in the Inflation Reduction Act. There’s broad agreement that the changes will help to speed EV adoption, but there’s also concern that some provisions of the law could be counter-productive, at least in the short… Read more »
ONE’s hybrid battery pack combines the best aspects of two chemistries to deliver 600 miles of EV range
Q&A with ONE CTO Dr. Steven Kaye. There is a wide range of characteristics that describe the performance of any given battery chemistry: energy density, specific energy, specific power, discharge efficiency, self-discharge rate, cycle life, calendar life, and—not the least important—cost. Some types of Li-ion chemistries are really good in a few characteristics but fall… Read more »
FREYR Battery to build gigafactory in Norway
FREYR Battery is replacing its plan to build two gigafactories with a plan to build a single gigafactory which increases capacity by 150%. The estimated construction cost will be $1.7 billion. “FREYR is increasing the nameplate capacity of Giga Arctic to 29 GWh in response to improving battery supply-demand dynamics, ongoing commercial success, significant progress… Read more »
Independent experts confirm NOVONIX’s life-cycle assessment of synthetic graphite product
NOVONIX has announced that a life-cycle assessment of its GX-23 synthetic anode graphite product has been reviewed and confirmed by independent experts as compliant with ISO-14040:2006 and ISO-14044:2006 standards. Minviro, a sustainable mining specialist, performed the life-cycle assessment. According to NOVONIX, the “GX-23 synthetic anode graphite Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) clearly demonstrated an approximate 60%… Read more »
Britishvolt wants to build battery gigafactories around the world
Battery “gigafactories” are under construction all over the world—and none too soon. As EV sales grow, it is critical to establish local battery production and shorten supply chains. However, state-of-the-art cell packaging and chemistries are evolving quickly these days. How will cell manufacturers future-proof their cell production facilities? How flexible will these new plants be… Read more »
Are nickel-based batteries on the way out?
Is a new standards war—or rather, a chemistries war—developing? There are several important differences between the NMC and LFP battery chemistries, but the most salient points seem to be that batteries based on NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt) offer higher energy density, but those based on LFP (lithium iron phosphate) tend to be cheaper. Chinese automakers… Read more »
Sion Power’s experimental lithium metal cells deliver 2,500 cycles
Sion Power says one of its multilayer lithium metal pouch cells has performed for over 2,500 cycles, retaining 70% of its initial capacity. The cell was charged for 180 minutes at the C/3 rate and completely discharged in 45 minutes at the 4C/3 rate. The experimental cell is part of Sion Power’s Licerion product line…. Read more »
Motiv Power Systems next-gen battery demonstrates 150-mile range in a medium-duty electric truck
Commercial EV producer Motiv Power Systems has partnered with Michigan-based energy storage specialist Our Next Energy (ONE). Motiv’s 6th-generation step vans, trucks, and buses, which use ONE’s battery technology, are currently in testing, and will launch in early 2023. ONE’s Aries LFP battery system delivers more than 150 miles of range with a full vehicle… Read more »
