Battery Modeling and Simulations Using COMSOL Multiphysics®

(Updated Schedule: Session moved from Tuesday, Sep 1 to Thursday, Sep 3 at 10:30 am EDT)

The COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling and simulation software contains various tools for creating and running battery models. The level of detail ranges from single-reaction lumped cell models, used for simulating temperature distributions on large-scale battery modules and packs, to multireaction high-resolution electrode geometries on the nm-level, used for capacity fade, and design optimization of the various cell components and chemistries.

This talk will present an overview of various battery modeling approaches for thermal, performance, abuse, and capacity fade (aging) simulations. The talk will include live demonstrations of these concepts using the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

Battery modeling among new features in Ricardo Software’s new release

The second of Ricardo Software’s quarterly product releases for 2020 adds new capabilities in the area of EV powertrains. Both the Ricardo VECTIS CFD package and IGNITE complex systems modeling product now provide solutions for optimizing battery systems. These include modeling of the detailed heat exchange and cell degradation that occurs through use and storage.  … Read more »

Tesla used a variety of technical advances to increase Model S range to 400 miles

Tesla’s vehicles continue to get better. The company recently announced that all North American Model S Long Range Plus vehicles now have an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles—an increase of almost 20% compared to a 2019 model with the same battery pack design. How did Tesla’s engineers achieve such a significant improvement? It was… Read more »

VW to shift to dealer agency model for EV sales

It’s no secret that auto dealerships are a major bottleneck for EV sales. Legacy automakers may cast an envious eye on Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model, but they cannot practically (or legally) cut the dealers out of the equation. Now Volkswagen may have found a way to solve this dilemma, at least in Germany. VW has… Read more »

Tesla’s Model 3 includes V2G capability…or does it?

Lately we’ve been hearing a lot of news about bidirectional charging, which supports vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications and other nifty stuff. In January, Wallbox announced what appears to be the first bidirectional charger for the home market. Fermata Energy has several V2X projects in the works, including a partnership with Nissan. And ORNL recently demonstrated bidirectional… Read more »

Ford cancels Rivian EV project due to “current environment”—development of new gas models continues

We’re learning more about the coronavirus every day. Now it seems that it infects EVs, but not ICE vehicles. Ford and Rivian have canceled their plans to jointly develop an EV for the Lincoln brand, citing the “current environment” around the ongoing coronavirus crisis as the reason. Although development of some of Ford’s new gas-powered… Read more »

China cuts EV subsidies—Tesla Model 3 exceeds price limit

China has announced a cut to its subsidies on new energy vehicles (NEVs), effective immediately. It’s been something of a rollercoaster ride for the subsidies of late. In 2015, the government announced plans to end the subsidies this year. In January, it said there would be “no significant cuts” this year. In March it confirmed… Read more »

Monthly EV market share in Germany tops 9 percent, led by Tesla Model 3

Germany, Europe’s largest auto market, has been slower than some of its neighbors to embrace EVs, but things seem to be changing fast. In March, plug-in vehicles accounted for a record 9.2% of the total auto market (as reported by CleanTechnica). The balance between pure EVs and PHEVs was about even. For the first time,… Read more »

Tesla builds ventilators from Model 3 parts

Tesla, along with many other industrial firms, is working on multiple fronts to help alleviate a shortage of ventilators. The company has bought surplus ventilators from China, and distributed them to medical personnel around the US, and is also reportedly working with medical device manufacturer Medtronic to build ventilators at the New York Gigafactory. Now… Read more »
