Researchers develop cobalt-free cathodes using hydrothermal synthesis

Researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed a new method for producing cathodes for lithium-ion batteries by relying on hydrothermal synthesis, which eliminates the need to use cobalt, making the process quicker, less wasteful and less toxic. They describe their work in: “Hydrothermal synthesis of Co-free NMA cathodes for high-performance Li-ion… Read more »

Nth Cycle wins $2.15-million DOE grant for electro-extraction technology

Nth Cycle, a metals processing and recycling technology company, has been awarded a $2.15-million grant from the DOE under the Battery Materials and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Funding Opportunity (BMBMR) program.  According to the company, its low-emission refining technology, called electro-extraction, transforms the outputs of metal scrap, electronics recycling, untapped mining resources and waste from… Read more »

Vale Canada to supply GM with nickel for EV batteries

Vale Canada has signed a long-term deal with GM to supply the automaker with nickel sulfate, a chemical compound used for producing cathode active materials for nickel-based lithium-ion batteries. Under the agreement, Vale will supply GM with battery-grade nickel sulfate, equivalent to 25,000 metric tons of contained nickel per year, which GM will use to… Read more »

Engineers find a novel way to control dendrite propagation in solid-state batteries

Solid-state batteries are a major focus for battery researchers, as they could offer weight and size reductions, as well as greater safety, compared to current Li-ion designs. However, they have a major drawback: dendrites, root-like structures that build up on the lithium surface and penetrate the solid electrolyte, eventually crossing from one electrode to the… Read more »

GM and Microvast to develop new battery separator tech, build US plant

GM and battery manufacturer Microvast are collaborating to develop specialized EV battery separator technology, and to build a new separator plant in the US, supported by a $200-million grant from the DOE’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing initiative. Separators are battery components that separate the anode from the cathode, while allowing for ion transfer…. Read more »
