U.S. Steel converts diesel locomotives to battery power

U.S. Steel has converted two of its diesel switcher locomotives at its Mon Valley Works plants to lithium-ion battery operation.  The locomotives were built by Louisiana-headquartered Innovative Rail Technologies (IRT). The conversion was funded in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. U.S .Steel contributed $2.3 million of the total cost. The locomotives carry… Read more »

Renesas launches new generation of automotive Intelligent Power Devices

Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Renesas Electronics has revealed a new automotive Intelligent Power Device (IPD) that’s designed to safely and flexibly control power distribution within vehicles. The new RAJ2810024H12HPD is available in a small TO-252-7 package and reduces the mounting area by about 40% compared to the conventional TO-263 package product. Renesas also says that the… Read more »

Advanced Material Solutions For Automotive Power Module Applications

In recent years, high power electronics have become one of the fastest growing market segments of the semiconductor industry. Power electronic modules used therein are typically operating at high voltage and high current density and must cope with high temperatures and harsh conditions. The demand for higher efficiency of electrical drive systems in e-mobility, meaning… Read more »

New automotive connector combines signal, power and data connectivity

Connector and sensor company TE Connectivity has launched a new automotive connector that combines signal, power and data connectivity into a single connector. It’s designed for applications in which low-voltage power, signal and data connectors for cameras, displays, antenna connections and sensors are running alongside each other. The Generation Y 68P Sealed Hybrid Inline Connector… Read more »

Simplifying Automotive Emergency Power Supply Architecture

In this presentation, we will review the low voltage power architecture used in automotive traction inverters. This power source drives control electronics and provides gate driver power for the main traction IGBTs/MOSFETs. It must also provide redundancy to meet ASIL requirements. This last requirement represents a special challenge as it means the Emergency Power Supply… Read more »

Full Power Testing Solutions for EV Battery and Automotive Electronics

In response to the growth of the electrification ecosystem, engineers face new challenges during vehicle design verification, performance evaluation and mass production. Higher voltage and current, faster switching time and different standard compliance seem to make the power testing job more complicated. It’s time to find a turnkey solution that makes all of these easier… Read more »

Power Integrations new automotive-qualified silicon diodes for high-switching-speed designs

Power Integrations, a maker of high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, has announced its 600 V, 12 A Qspeed diode, the AEC-Q101-qualified QH12TZ600Q. The company says the device’s Qrr of 14 nC at 25° C improves the efficiency of an onboard charger’s PFC stage and reduces the thermals of the PFC MOSFETs.  Senior Product… Read more »
