Li-Cycle recovers usable battery-grade materials from shredded Li-ion batteries

Q&A with CEO Ajay Kochhar It’s usually one of the first objections cited by EV naysayers: batteries can’t or won’t be recycled, and they contain hazardous materials that will end up in landfills. In fact, no such sinister scenario is likely—most of the components of Li-ion batteries are valuable, and it’s quite feasible, technically and economically,… Read more »

Li-Cycle to open battery recovery plant in New York

Canada-based Li-Cycle will establish a commercial-scale lithium-ion battery resource recovery plant at Eastman Business Park in Monroe County, New York. The company says the new plant will create at least 23 jobs in its first year. Empire State Development will provide up to $450,000 to Li-Cycle through the Excelsior Jobs Program in exchange for job-creation… Read more »

Aqua Metals is building a more sustainable battery recycling ecosystem

Q&A with Aqua Metals execs Steve Cotton and David Regan Regardless of the claims made in Facebook memes, Li-ion batteries are eminently recyclable, and current recycling methods cause far less environmental damage than the well-documented depredations of the petroleum industry. However, as sustainability is central to the mission of the EV industry, we need to… Read more »

IRA incentives set off battery recycling gold rush

As numerous EV execs have told Charged in recent months, the “buy American” provisions of the IRA and BIL are driving massive investments in domestic mining and processing for EV battery raw materials. Now a similar gold rush appears to be gathering speed in the battery recycling field. The voluminous Inflation Reduction Act includes a… Read more »

Everledger and Ford introduce battery passport pilot

Digital transparency company Everledger and Ford have launched a battery passport pilot for tracking EV batteries. “The battery passport concept was launched by the Global Battery Alliance (GBA), a multi-stakeholder alliance that brings together 110 leading international organizations,” says Everledger. “The battery passport is the digital identity of a battery which includes information about its… Read more »

Benchmark Minerals: Battery production scrap will be the main source of recyclable material this decade

As demand for lithium-ion batteries accelerates, recycling of raw materials will be an essential part of the circular EV ecosystem. However, in the near term, the primary source of recyclable battery material will be scrap material from battery production, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence’s latest Recycling Report. Benchmark forecasts that scrap will account for 78%… Read more »

The EV raw materials crunch: How bad, how long, how to solve it?

This article originally appeared in Issue 60: April-June 2022 Subscribe now Every new technology must overcome a series of temporary constraints on its way to widespread adoption. Since modern EVs appeared a decade ago, they’ve motored past many of these bottlenecks, (or hurdles, or roadblocks—pick your preferred metaphor). Range has increased, access to charging infrastructure has expanded,… Read more »

Ford and Redwood Materials to collaborate on battery recycling

Redwood Materials, the battery materials firm founded by Tesla cofounder JB Straubel, has announced a partnership with Ford. The two companies will work together to “create a closed loop for battery recycling and a domestic supply chain for critical battery materials.” Ford also made a strategic investment of $50 million in Redwood. “Excited to work… Read more »

Recovering Usable Battery-Grade Materials From Shredded Li-Ion Cells

‍Li-Cycle Co-Founder, President & CEO Ajay Kochhar will discuss the company’s unique process that allows them to recover 80 to 100% of all materials found in lithium-ion batteries. Li-Cycle’s proprietary closed-loop process ensures that all materials from lithium-ion batteries are either recovered to return in the battery supply chain or sent for further processing to… Read more »

JB Straubel gives a tour of Redwood Materials’ battery recycling operation

Despite what the anti-EV brigade would like you to believe, recycling lithium-ion batteries is quite feasible both technologically and financially, and several companies are doing so right now. One of these is Li-Cycle, which was featured in the July/August issue of Charged. Another is Redwood Materials , which has gotten a lot of press coverage… Read more »
