Smith Electric Vehicles, makers of the Newton and Edison electric commercial vans, has decided to drop its plans for an Initial Public Offering.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based company filed for the IPO in November, and is now waiting for SEC approval. It expects to sell 4.45 million shares at between $16 and $18, raising about $76 million.

The EVs will be sold under the Smith brand, and will combine Wanxiang’s components with Smith’s proprietary drive and battery platforms.

The program, which is funded with $10 million from the federal government, will offer companies vouchers worth up to $20,000 each for the purchase of EVs over 10,000 pounds.
The company will begin production of its Newton™ all-electric medium-duty truck at the new factory in the second half of 2012, creating up to 100 local jobs.
