Delta-Q introduces new module for its Stackable Charging System to support AC charging

Canadian charger manufacturer Delta-Q has launched its new Vehicle Charge Interface Module (VCIM) to allow its Stackable Charging System to support AC charging stations and two-way communicating electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). The VCIM allows the Delta-Q chargers to be used with standard EVSE by helping negotiate the AC current limits and communicate the electrical… Read more »

Infineon’s new 900 A IGBT chip offers 30% less static loss

German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon has introduced a new version of its IGBT7 chip in its TRENCHSTOP line that boasts 30% less static loss than previous models. The 1,200 V module provides a leading nominal current of 900 A. Infineon says this enables a 30% higher inverter output current from the same frame size compared with… Read more »

ON Semiconductor introduces new power modules for high-voltage EV inverters

ON Semiconductor has released the first two devices within its new VE-Trac family of power modules for high-voltage automotive traction inverters. Future devices in the VE-Trac family will include discrete power devices, isolated gate drivers, and wide bandgap (WBG) devices. The company says its first two devices are ideally suited for use in the main… Read more »

UnitedSiC announces SiC FETs with RDS(on) of less than 10 mohms

Range and horsepower may get the headlines, but to powertrain designers, drain-source resistance, also known as RDS(on), is a sexy spec. Those in the know are excited over the news that UnitedSiC, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, is introducing four new SiC field-effect transistors (FETs) that boast RDS(on) levels of… Read more »

Rivian’s VP of Propulsion: Thermal issues are the dominant limiting factor for maximizing EV performance

Charged recently chatted with Rivian’s VP of Propulsion Richard Farquhar to learn more about the design and development of the company’s unique electric platform (read the whole story in our upcoming issue). Farquhar spent 15 years as Powertrain Director at McLaren Automotive, designing and developing some of the highest-performance propulsion systems in the world for… Read more »

Hitachi starts mass production of 800-volt EV inverter

Hitachi Automotive Systems is starting mass production of its 800-volt, high-output EV inverter. The company says that, thanks to its strong cooling performance, the new inverter delivers twice the voltage and 2.7 times the power density of previous generations. Most EVs are based on a 400-volt system, so in order to increase driving range, additional… Read more »

Cree to supply SiC semiconductors to ZF for electric drives

Cree, a US maker of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, has partnered with German parts supplier ZF Friedrichshafen to supply SiC semiconductors for electric drives. ZF will initially use Cree’s technology to fulfill pre-existing orders from several auto manufacturers for silicon carbide-based electric drives, but ZF hopes to make silicon carbide electric drivelines available to the… Read more »
