Nidec announces in-wheel motor prototype

Motor manufacturer Nidec has announced a prototype for an in-wheel EV traction motor. The company aims to begin mass production of the motor around 2023. The prototype motor fits within the wheel hubs of an EV, a design which Nidec claims allows for higher efficiency and lighter, more compact designs than motors occupying the engine… Read more »

ELANTAS increases electric motor longevity with nanoparticle-infused insulation

Protecting against dielectric fatigue Like the engines in conventional vehicles, the electric motors in EVs are designed for longevity, but every device will wear out eventually. While motors have many fewer moving parts than ICEs, they are under considerable electrical and mechanical stress. A properly designed electric motor should have a useful life that far… Read more »

A closer look at the losses in EV motors

In the bad old days when the only batteries suitable for traction applications were flooded lead-acid and Ni-Cd types, the battery was the least efficient component of an EV powertrain, routinely delivering back only 50-70% of the amp-hours that went into charging it (aka the Coulometric efficiency). When you knew you were going to… Read more »

Freudenberg introduces new testing tools for high-rpm seals in electric motors

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has introduced several specially-designed test stands to measure frictional torque in shaft seals used in electric motors. The stands, which are located in its Weinheim test facility, can measure at rotational speeds up to 36,000 rpm. Freudenberg says that seals used between electric motors and downstream transmissions must withstand higher speeds and… Read more »

YASA signs innovation agreement with automotive OEM

Electric motor manufacturer YASA has announced the signing of a long-term joint innovation agreement with an unidentified global automotive OEM. The two companies will collaborate to develop custom electric motor and controller solutions for the OEM’s line of EVs and PHEVs. “This agreement brings together one of the world’s best-known automotive manufacturers with YASA, the… Read more »

BorgWarner releases new integrated eAxle

Automotive parts supplier BorgWarner is releasing an integrated axle called iDM. The modular eAxle contains a transmission, electric motor and power electronics. The iDM is available in three versions and can be integrated into the front or rear axles of passenger and light commercial vehicles. The iDM’s integrated power electronics are designed to allow for a… Read more »

Bosch acquires motor maker EM-motive from Daimler

Bosch has acquired electric motor manufacturer EM-motive from Daimler. Since Bosch and Daimler set up EM-motive as a fifty-fifty joint venture in 2011, the company has manufactured some 450,000 electric motors. “For Bosch, the complete acquisition of EM-motive is the next logical step on the path to becoming the market leader for electromobility,” said Stefan Hartung,… Read more »

New motor cooling solution could lead to lighter EVs

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed a new method for cooling electric motors, which could help reduce the weight of EVs. With the new cooling method, motors can be housed in lighter-weight polymer materials, and they also benefit from increased efficiency and power density. The… Read more »

DOE invents high-efficiency magnet for EV and hybrid motors

The DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory has invented a new magnet technology, called HyMag, which could lead to greater efficiency and lighter weight in EV and hybrid motors. HyMag increases a permanent magnet’s usable magnetic flux density, a property of permanent magnets that can be harnessed for power generation.  “The higher the flux density you use… Read more »

Infinitum Electric secures $1.8 million in funding for efficient HVAC motor technology

Infinitum Electric, a developer of electric motors, has closed a $1.8 million Series A financing round, bringing its total funding to $2.7 million. The company says it will use the funding to launch an HVAC-specific, fully-integrated motor and increase research and development efforts for applications in the EVs and Oil and Gas markets. Infinitum credits… Read more »
