Report: Indonesia to overtake China as top nickel producer this year

Materials supply chain intelligence company Roskill expects Indonesia to become the world’s largest producer of refined nickel this year, pushing China to second place. As recently as 2014, Indonesia produced only 24 kilotons of refined nickel. In 2020, Indonesia produced 636 kt of refined nickel, most of which was nickel pig iron (NPI) for the… Read more »

EU releases study on demand and supply security of nickel for EV batteries

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has released a report by Roskill that analyzes the EU’s nickel requirements for EV batteries within the context of the global market over a twenty-year forecast horizon to 2040. Against this demand backdrop, Roskill critically assessed the EU’s internal supply capabilities and identified the risk of future shortages…. Read more »

De-Risking The Bet On High Nickel Cathodes

As EV adoption has grown, there has been an increased focus in the battery industry on the development and implementation of high-nickel cathodes from 80% Ni to now 95 and above. These materials can deliver improved energy density relative to today’s materials, but suffer from poor lifetime and durability. Variations in electrode composition can impact… Read more »

Variations in electrode composition can impact the performance of the material.

This presentation highlights parameters that can accelerate implementation of high-nickel cathodes in applications. The presentation focuses on approaches other than compositional changes to the high nickel NMC’s to improve cycle life in high-loading electrodes.

Sunstone Engineering’s new battery welding system enables copper and nickel tab welding

Sunstone Engineering, a manufacturer of high-tech micro-welding and engraving solutions, has developed a new battery welding system that’s capable of welding copper and nickel tabs to power cells. Sunstone’s Omega PA250i includes new welding technology that clears a path for battery manufacturers to use pure copper or nickel tabs in the production of power cells…. Read more »

Report: EVs will drive demand for nickel sulfate over the next decade

In a newly-released report on the nickel sulfate industry, Roskill forecasts that the expanding EV industry will become the key driver of growth in nickel demand. In the past, the market for nickel sulfate was largely driven by the plating industry and non-Li-ion battery applications, such as NiMH and NiCd batteries, but year-over-year growth in… Read more »

Majority of demand for nickel and cobalt coming from 5 battery suppliers

In 2019, over 59,000 tons of nickel and 14,400 tons of cobalt were deployed globally in passenger EV batteries, a one-year increase of 39% and 34%, respectively, according to data from Adamas Intelligence’s EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker. Panasonic used  51% of the global market share of nickel (down from 56% in 2018),… Read more »

Fortum, BASF and Nornickel to partner on battery recycling

Finish utility company Fortum, German chemical company BASF, and Russian mining company Nornickel have signed a letter of intent to develop a battery recycling cluster in Harjavalta, Finland. The companies aim to promote the production and use of recycled raw materials in the EV battery market. BASF will use the recycled materials in its planned… Read more »

Nickel used in EV batteries increased 39% in 2019

Nickel deployment in passenger EV batteries totaled 59,271 tonnes in 2019, according to Adamas Intelligence, representing an increase of 39% from 2018. BEVs were responsible for 76% of passenger battery nickel use globally in 2019, up from 71% in 2018. The sales-weighted average amount of nickel deployed per EV globally in 2019 was 12.9 kilograms,… Read more »
