In this new video, aimed at emergency personnel, rescue experts Brock Archer and Ron Moore explain the special issues faced by first responders to EV accidents, and explode a couple of urban legends.

For those of us who aren’t in the rescue trade, much of this is fairly dry stuff. However, there is an informative primer on how EVs work, and an interesting tour of the electrical components of the Model S. Especially important for emergency personnel is the explanation of how to disconnect a vehicle’s high voltage system.

The really interesting bit comes towards the end. The rescue team flips a Model S on its side, revealing an underside that looks nothing like that of an old-fashioned gas vehicle, and (cue the scary music) uses a powerful “jaws of life” tool to rip away a door and quarter panel, then tear apart the entire front end!

Reactions in the electrosphere ranged from horror at the destruction of a $100,000 vehicle to ghoulish fascination at seeing the mysterious innards exposed.
