Proterra’s new customizable battery pack offers 25-75 kWh of energy in a compact package

Heavy-duty EV-builder Proterra has unveiled a new series of battery packs that offers a customizable energy storage system for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

The new, narrower H Series battery packs are designed to be packaged into standard truck frame rails. They have a width of 620 mm, and can be configured with 25-75 kWh of energy storage capacity each.

Proterra will also continue to offer its S Series battery packs, which power Proterra’s current fleet of battery-electric transit buses and other Proterra Powered vehicles. The S Series battery packs have a width of 860 mm and can contain up to 113 kWh of capacity each.

Proterra’s modular H Series and S Series battery packs are highly customizable, enabling a vehicle’s energy storage system to be comprised of multiple packs.

The H and S Series battery packs each leverages its own uniquely sized module. Both modules can be produced at four different voltage ratings, offering OEMs the flexibility to vary voltage and energy requirements to meet their individual needs.

Proterra’s battery platform uses NCM 811 lithium-ion cylindrical cells, is scalable in all dimensions, and can support vehicle voltages up to 1,200 VDC and total capacities up to 6 MWh.

Proterra batteries feature patented passive and active safety features and liquid thermal conditioning, and they adhere to safety standards including ISO 26262 (up to ASIL C).

“Proterra’s safe, reliable battery technology has been proven in hundreds of vehicles that are on the road today. That’s why world-class manufacturers are choosing Proterra to power their school buses, coach buses, delivery vans, and other electric vehicles,” said Proterra CEO Jack Allen.

“Our flexible battery platform enables energy and geometry ‘right-sizing’ to ensure our battery system meets the unique needs of each of our customers, including cost and range requirements,” said CTO Dustin Grace.
