GM has begun construction of a new facility in Pontiac, Michigan for race engine design and development, which will also include an electric motor laboratory and gear center. The GM Performance and Racing Center will be home to about 100 employees, and is expected to be in use by mid-2015.
The electric motor lab produces prototype motors and validates manufacturing processes used in the production of electric and hybrid vehicle motors. The gear center supports design, manufacturing processes, inspection techniques and testing of gears for the next generation of GM transmissions.
Other than sharing the same building, GM has said nothing about any connection between the race engine design center and the electric motor lab. However, cross-pollination is very much in vogue in the business world these days, so might the company field an electric racing team at some point?
