Bye Aerospace tests eFlyer 2 prototype with 90 kW Siemens motor

E-plane startup Bye Aerospace has begun flight tests of its two-seat eFlyer 2 prototype, equipped with a new 90 kW Siemens SP70D production motor.

The new motor weighs 57 pounds and features a 90 kW peak rating (120 hp) and a continuous power rating of 70 kW (94 hp). In addition to the new motor, Bye Aerospace added an additional battery pack, an updated cowling, a new spinner, and a charging port. The company is also evaluating a new three-blade developmental propeller from Hartzell.

The Colorado-based company hopes its eFlyer family of aircraft, beginning with the 2-seat eFlyer 2, will be the first FAA-certified all-electric planes to serve the flight training and general aviation markets.

“During the prototype eFlyer 2 flight tests that began on July 17, the new Siemens production motor met or exceeded expectations in all performance indicator areas,” said Bye Aerospace CEO George E Bye. “These important tests are validating the eFlyer’s operating economy, efficiency, and performance while producing no CO2.”
