The company will spend $50 million on 200 DC fast charging stations, $40 million for level 2 charging station infrastructure, and 9$ million on research and development.
The project is currently gathering data at a rate of 100,000 miles per day. It plans to publish over 40 white papers on various topics ranging from the needs of commercial charging to regulatory issues.
The WattStation Connect software platform will allow charger operators to manage, monitor and maintain their EV charging “ecosystem,” gather information and process payments.
EVs and hybrids will get a 10% discount on parking, while SUVs and other “gas guzzlers” will pay a 10% surcharge.
The pilot system will let an EV receive and respond to charge instructions based on the grid condition and the vehicle’s battery state, so energy providers can manage charging during peak hours.
The DOE intends to select up to four projects. Selected teams will have three years to integrate their wireless charging technology into a “light duty GCEDV.”
