New VW Passat offers plug-in hybrid option

Volkswagen’s eighth-generation Passat, unveiled this week at the Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam, offers 10 different powertrain options, including a PHEV version. All versions are equipped with a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode.

The brand-new plug-in Passat features a 115 kW (154 hp) TSI gasoline engine and an 80 kW electric motor. Total power output is 155 kW (208 hp), and electric range is 50 km (31 miles). Fuel consumption and emission figures are similar to those of the plug-in Golf GTE.

The new Passats come with a vast selection of driver assistance options, including a camera-based Area View; Park Assist, which enables semi-automatic parking; Trailer Assist (for driving in reverse with a trailer); Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); and Emergency Assist, designed to rouse a sleepy or inattentive driver.
